Deep tissue massage  focuses the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. The therapist works on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is very helpful for  tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. This is often done by physically breaking down  adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement

It uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, with more intense pressure.
